Mini Médoc at Porthcawl

On Saturday 15th June 2024, some of our members took part in the Mini Médoc. This is the full event report:

In the charming seaside town of Porthcawl, a lively group of locals decided to bring a touch of French flair to their community by organizing a “Mini-Médoc” run. Inspired by the famous Marathon du Médoc in France, they planned a 10k route that would weave through the town, featuring nine Chateaux stops where runners could sample red wine.

On the morning of the event, the streets of Porthcawl were filled with an eclectic mix of costumes. Superheroes, princesses, pirates, and even a few wine bottles jogged side by side, their laughter echoing through the town. The sun was already blazing, promising a hot day ahead.

The first Chateau was set up just outside the town centre, where cheerful marshals greeted runners with small cups of velvety red wine supplied by Bargain Booze, Mary Street. The runners cheered, clinked their cups, and continued on their way, already feeling the camaraderie that this unique event fostered.

As they made their way towards Sandy Bay, the fresh wind provided a welcome respite from the heat. Here, runners paused to enjoy the breathtaking views of the coast before heading to the next Chateau. Despite the cooling breeze, the temperature soared in other parts of the route, meaning the organisers had to do a quick water stop at the local Aldi, giving much-needed relief for some of the runners. Volunteers then handed out water to the entrants, ensuring everyone stayed hydrated in the boiling sun.

The remaining Chateaux were spread out along the route, each one offering not just wine, but encouragement and cheer. The marshals were nothing short of amazing, their enthusiasm and good spirits adding to the festive atmosphere. Many runners, caught up in the fun, ran well beyond the planned 10k, enjoying the experience and the beautiful Porthcawl scenery.

Finally, the runners made their way back to the Ancient Briton, a beloved local pub. Here, they were greeted with bespoke Wine Medals, each one a charming reminder of the day’s adventure. The sponsors, MKM, had prepared goody bags filled with treats and useful items, adding to the sense of accomplishment and celebration.

With the run officially over, it was time for party mode. Inside the Ancient Briton, the atmosphere was electric. Costumed runners danced and laughed, sharing stories of their journey and the memorable moments along the way. The pub buzzed with music, conversation, and the clinking of glasses, as everyone toasted to the success of the Mini-Médoc.

The event had been a spectacular success, blending the charm of Porthcawl with the spirit of the Médoc. It was a day of fun, friendship, and community, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating the next year’s run.
